See following link for an introductory post on Mesmer:
In a number of places in his works, Mesmer talks of his teaching being about a principle of preservation, as well as of healing. His editor and colleague, Karl Christian Wolfart, called it the science of the preservation of humanity in his preface to Mesmer's last work Mesmerismus, published in 1814.1 What might Mesmer have meant by "preservation," and how can we learn from this idea?
In his 1779 Mémoire, Mesmer indicates that practice of his teaching brings to light the underlying fact that Nature "offers a universal means of healing and preserving humanity," and that it is practice or experience alone that will scatter the clouds of errors which have enveloped his system, and allow the realisation of this important truth.2
